Army Aviators

Today's picture shows a couple of very early aviators. The picture was taken in 1912, and they were pilots for the Army. The military was very quick to realize the potential game changing nature of aircraft for use in war.

  1. Not sure I would agree with your assessment of the military being quick. They court marshaled Gen Billy Mitchell in 1925 for having the cojones to suggest aircraft could sink battleships. And it wasn't until 1949 that the powers that be finally decided a separate Air Force was a good idea.

  2. Talk about flying by the seat of your pants. Is there a seat belt or anything holding these guys in? Looks like the flower pot head gear was the latest in safety back then. Like Downtown Indy said the other day... We are Devo, are we not men? Thats was too funny. Great picture!

  3. Oh, but his flower pot is nicely padded for safety.
